Step 1 of 17
Think about times when you are at your best. What tasks are you performing? What environment are you in? Are you alone or with others? Does it involve something you’re particularly interested in or passionate about? Is your performance influenced by any form of preparation?

Where there is passion, there is energy. And energy can be harnessed to create the results you seek. What are the great passions in your life? When do you feel the most energized, focused, and committed?
Think about your natural talents and gifts. What do others notice about you? In what areas do you feel most skilled? Talents are as varied as people, and we all have them. What are yours?
What is your dream? If you weren’t hampered by financial or social constraints, what would you choose to do? Is there something you are hoping to accomplish or some impact you hope to make?
Imagine your life as an epic journey and you are the hero or heroine. What is your journey about? What is your cause? What do you hope to achieve? Complete the following statement by describing what you are attempting to do in your life, for whom, and what results you are hoping for.
Imagine your 80th birthday celebration. Who will be there with you? What will people say about your life? How will they describe your character?
What mark do you want to leave on the world? What impact do you want to have on the people around you? When all is said and done, what will you have made possible for others?
What are you putting off? Sometimes the things you put off because they are too difficult are the things that would strengthen you the most. What do you struggle to find time for? Are there things you feel you really should do, even though you’ve put them off? What are they?
We are directly influenced by those around us. There are people in your life you likely hope to emulate—people who have shaped who you are today and are examples of who you want to become. Imagine you could invite to dinner three people who have influenced you the most. Who would they be?
Let’s think of balance as a state of fulfillment and renewal in each of four dimensions: Physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual.
What are the single most important things you can do in each of these areas that will have the greatest positive impact on your life and help you achieve a sense of balance?
Assign a value or rank to each idea or theme that was proposed in the previous steps. Which themes are rising to the top?
Try using FranklinCovey’s prioritization method. Start by labeling each idea with an A, B, or C according to its importance. Then, within each letter, rank each idea numerically so you have A1, A2, B1, B2, etc. Then, reflect the top five or seven in greater detail.

Now that you have your top ideas or themes, you can start to refine them to develop your mission statement. Work to create a draft of the statement, with the end goal of one concise paragraph.
Reflect on your paragraph from the previous step. Continue to refine it until it represents your values, principles, and contributions in a concise way. When it feels complete, continue to the final review.
